Writing Workshops: In coordination with the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the new phase of Operation Homecoming will present in-depth writing workshops at VA medical centers, military hospitals, and other affiliated centers. Veterans and active duty troops will be invited to participate in four- to six-week writing workshops taught by some of America's most distinguished writers at 25 sites around the country. These workshops will provide service men and women with the opportunity to write about their wartime experiences in a variety of forms including fiction, verse, letters, essay, memoir, and personal journal. The visiting writers, some of whom are war veterans themselves, will help the troops and veterans share their stories with current and future generations.

Anthology: In September 2006, Random House published Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families, a stunning collection of selected writings from the first two years of the Operation Homecoming program. Edited by Andrew Carroll, the best-selling author of War Letters and Behind the Lines, this anthology is a unique, unflinching testimony to the service and sacrifice of our military in Iraq and Afghanistan. On Memorial Day 2008, a new expanded paperback edition of the anthology was published by the University of Chicago Press. The anthology is available in hardback, paperback and audio CD and is available online and at bookstores. Proceeds from the anthology will be used to deliver arts programming to military communities. |
