What is Southern Visions?

Southern Visions is a traveling exhibit program that showcases traditional and contemporary art from the Mississippi Delta to the low country of South Carolina, from the black belt of Alabama to the Appalachian mountains, to the streets of New Orleans to the beaches of the Florida Keys. The program has been highly successful in its ten years of operation. Rural and underserved communities throughout the southern region have presented over 200 showings of our exhibitions, exposing a combined audience of over 500,000 to the creativity and artistic diversity of southern arts and culture. Exhibit hosts consistently give Southern Visions excellent ratings for exhibit content and quality, educational guides, promotional materials and customer service.

Mission Statement

To provide artistically excellent traveling exhibits especially to small and mid-size communities that promote Southern artists, and educate the public about the rich art and cultural traditions of the American South.

Rhythm & Roots, Southern Music Traditions

While the South has a rich tradition of deeply rooted music forms—Appalachian, Blues, Bluegrass, Cajun, Country, Gospel, etc.—the region is also home to numerous transplanted music traditions. Musical expressions from the Asian, Caribbean, and Latino communities are constantly evolving and flourishing in their new environment. Rhythm & Roots is the first SAF exhibit to feature music and musicians from the South, one of our region’s most recognized and important art forms. Utilizing text panels, artifacts, fieldwork and historic photographs, and sound recordings (both fieldwork and commercial recordings), the exhibit will provide context for music traditions and their relationship to community. The exhibit will feature an audio component that will allow museum visitors to experience music samples from the featured artists
