Criteria & Narrative

 

CRITERIA

Applications are reviewed and funding adjudications are made by using the following criteria to evaluate each application:

  • Artistic Excellence (20%) – Quality of writer(s)
  • Artistic Merit (20%) – Quality of project
  • Educational/Outreach Value (20%) – Quality of educational and outreach component(s)
  • Audience Development/Community Involvement (15%) – Degree of audience development efforts and community participation
  • Accessibility/Underserved Communities (15%) – Degree of facility and program accessibility and efforts to reach underserved and diverse populations
  • Organizational Capacity/Evaluation (10%) – Presenter’s ability to carry out and evaluate the project


APPLICATION NARRATIVE QUESTIONS

In addition to organizational and project information, you will respond to these narrative questions for Literary Arts Touring applications.

Provide a one-sentence DESCRIPTION of the project which SAF will use in publicity if a grant is awarded, e.g. “Poet Jane Public will conduct a three-day residency, with two master classes for university creative writing students, a memoir workshop for older adults, a lunch/coffee discussion and sharing with local writers, and a public evening reading at the ABC Lecture Hall.” [maximum 400 characters including spaces] 

A SCHEDULE helps the panelists/staff envision what will actually take place in your community. List the schedule of activities during the project including what, when, where, who, with/for whom, e.g. Day 1 morning: master class, university classroom, for 12 graduate-level creative writing students. Day 1 afternoon, lunch/coffee at local restaurant with 6-8 local writers to share and comment on work; Day 2 morning, three-hour workshop on personal memoir, community center, for up to 20 older adults. If your schedule is not complete at this time, provide as much detail as is known about how many activities will take place, and which community members/groups will be involved. ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE (20%) relates to the artist(s) as demonstrated through submitted work sample(s). The work sample(s) should represent the type of work the artist(s) will perform/read during your project. If sample is part of a larger publication/book, please mark the passage/section for the panel to review. Optional reviews of the writer’s work will also be reviewed.

ARTISTIC MERIT (20%) relates to the project and why this particular artist(s) was selected. Describe the project, and the relevance of the proposed artist/company and their work to the project; why were they chosen? [maximum 1500 characters including spaces, approximately 1/2 page]

EDUCATIONAL/OUTREACH VALUE (20%) relates to the requirement that participants be engaged in learning activities that have lasting impact. Describe the educational and outreach components of the project. Describe the anticipated impact for participants. [maximum 1500 characters including spaces, approximately 1/2 page]

When designing AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT (15%), projects do not necessarily have to serve the entire geographic community but should have targeted participants. Describe the audiences and community segments that you are targeting and engaging with this project. Describe why they were selected for involvement in this project, how they are involved in planning, and what community partners are involved. [maximum 1500 characters including spaces, approximately 1/2 page]

To address ACCESSIBILITY and UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES, (15%) provide specific strategies on how you will reach those that lack access to the arts due to geography, economic conditions, ethnic background, disability, age or other demonstrable factors for this project specifically (not your organization’s work in general). Grantees are required to ensure accessibility to funded programs to people with disabilities. In addition to physical access (ramps, accessible parking/box office/restrooms/seating, etc.), communications and programmatic accessibility is not only required but can help your organization build audiences and strengthen engagement. Describe actions you will take for programmatic/communications accessibility (e.g., planning/advisory committees including people with disabilities, large print programs/labels, American Sign Language interpretation, audio description, etc.). [maximum 1500 characters including spaces, approximately 1/2 page]

Designing and implementing an effective project design to meet your goals relate to ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY & EVALUATION (10%). Describe your organization’s ability to carry out the proposed project (include marketing efforts for target audience(s) and your organization’s presenting history). What value will be delivered to your community through this project? What will constitute success for your project? What evaluation methods do you have in place to learn how you are, or are not, achieving your goals? [maximum 1500 characters including spaces, approximately 1/2 page]
