A Mission of Impact
South Arts strengthens the South through advancing excellence in the arts, connecting the arts to key state and national policies and nurturing a vibrant quality of life.

A Vision of Progress
The South is a thriving region in the U.S. with the arts integral to its vitality.

An Identity Rooted in the South
BUILDING A BETTER SOUTH THROUGH THE ARTS

Letter from the Chair and Executive Director
With 35 years of past success and a new decade approaching, South Arts undertook a comprehensive evaluation and planning process to establish a course of action for the next six years. Our strategic goals go beyond enhancing the cultural vitality of our region. The arts connect to tourism, economic development, education, international relations, and help attract businesses, jobs, and a skilled workforce to communities.

This report for the year ending June 30, 2011 details how our programs connect to these larger issues through the arts and culture of the South. As always, we are grateful for the generous support from individuals, businesses, foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts, and our State Arts Agencies who make this work possible.

Dance Touring Initiative
In 2009, South Arts launched the three-year Dance Touring Initiative, a major new effort to develop stronger dance presentation and audiences for modern dance and contemporary ballet. During the first year, 11 presenter participants attended professional development and training sessions, and selected two dance companies—Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and Doug Varone and Dancers—to tour their venues in fall 2010.

Photo Caption: Eric Fliss, DTI participant, presented Doug Varone and Dancers for a week-long community residency that concluded with a performance at the new South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.

ArtsReady – Keep Your Door Open No Matter What
www.artsready.org

ArtsReady is an online tool to help organizations in the arts sector plan for and respond to emergency situations, mitigate damage, and protect our national cultural and artistic heritage.

As an economic and psychological stabilizer, the arts can be an invaluable bridge to the restoration of people and communities. It’s become obvious that the best way to recover from an unexpected event to be in a state of readiness: to have records backed up off site, crisis contact lists in place, and plans for restarting critical business functions as quickly as possible. But even more common causes of business interruptions can be costly with long-term repercussions. If bad weather prevents travel, equipment gets stolen, or illness prevents staff from being at work—ArtsReady helps prepare for those kinds of events, too.

South Arts Fund
Through our grant program, South Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts partner to provide funding for nonprofit organizations to present touring performing and literary artists and for presenter assistance.
