Makaya McCraven

Makaya McCraven and his key collaborators—Junius Paul, Marquis Hill, Jeff Parker, and Joel Ross—are the backbone of Chicago's progressive jazz scene. McCraven, a drummer, composer, and producer, has pioneered a unique style of "organic beat music" by blending live jazz improvisation with hip-hop production techniques. His work is showcased on albums like In the Moment, where live sessions were transformed into a studio album, and Universal Beings, a sprawling suite recorded across four different cities.

Bassist Junius Paul is a vital force in the scene, known for balancing free jazz with deep grooves, while trumpeter Marquis Hill, a Thelonious Monk competition winner, expertly fuses modern jazz with R&B and Chicago soul. Guitarist Jeff Parker adds an experimental rock and soul-jazz edge, notably on his album Suite for Max Brown, which was produced by McCraven.
