Narrative Instructions


Review Criteria

Applications are reviewed and funding adjudications are made using the following criteria to evaluate each application:

  • Impact (60%) – Potential impact on organization, community, or intended audience
  • Need (20%) – Need for planning visit or professional development opportunity
  • Planning (20%) – Evidence of effective planning

In addition to organizational and project information, you will need to provide a narrative addressing the following (be sure to address the questions specifically for the Planning Grants or the Travel Grants):


Planning Grants

Summary: Provide a one-sentence description of the planning visit which South Arts will use in publicity if a grant is awarded, e.g. “The Artistic Director of ABC Company will visit Atlanta for a two-day planning session and attend four meetings to discuss community needs.” (Maximum 500 characters including spaces)

Narrative:

  1. Describe your organization’s presenting history.
  2. Provide a description of the artist/company’s upcoming engagement. Include a detailed description of the performance, any residency details, and explain why the artist/company was chosen. Explain why this project is important to your community.
  3. Describe your goals for the planning visit. Provide a schedule of activities for the visit including what, when, where, who, and with/for whom. For example, day 1 morning (9:00am-10:30am): Artistic Director, along with program staff, meets with dance students at local college; day 1 afternoon (12:00pm-2:00pm): Artistic Director attends lunch-time discussion with Executive Director and community leaders at cultural center. Describe the purpose for each activity.
    (Maximum 5,000 characters including spaces, approximately 1 page)

Budget: Provide an itemized budget of the projected expenses. Include cost estimates for air/ground transportation, lodging, artist fee, and other related expenses. (Maximum 1,250 characters including spaces, approximately ¼ page)

 


Travel Grants

Summary: Provide a one-sentence description of the professional development activity which South Arts will use in publicity if a grant is awarded, e.g. “Jane Doe will attend a spring conference for presenters and participate in daily workshops and networking sessions, April 12-14, 2017 in Knoxville, Tennessee.” (Maximum 500 characters including spaces)

Narrative:

  1. Describe your organization’s presenting history.
  2. Provide a detailed description of the professional development opportunity and planned activities.
  3. Describe your goals for attending. Explain how the activities fit your role and responsibilities within the organization. Explain why you need to attend this particular event at this time, why financial assistance is needed, and the anticipated benefits.
    (Maximum 5,000 characters including spaces, approximately 1 page)

Budget: Provide an itemized budget of the projected expenses. Include cost estimates for air/ground transportation, lodging, admission/registration fee, and other related expenses. (Maximum 1,250 characters including spaces, approximately ¼ page)
