About the Artist

The Chase Elodia quartet is a Brooklyn-based ensemble. Founded in 2020, the group is set to release their debut album, Portrait Imperfect, on Biophilia Records in May 2022. The band's approach combines a collaborative and improvisational sensibility with an aesthetic orientation that has been nourished by singer-songwriters and electronic artists like Meshell Ndegeocello, Norma Winstone, and Becca Stevens.  Each member of the group is an exciting, emerging voice in the contemporary jazz scene in New York: Claire Dickson on Voice, Tyrone Allen on Bass, and Theo Walentiny on piano/keyboards, and Chase Elodia on drums. Morgan Guerin guests on EWI for two songs on the album.  Chase is a 2021 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award Winner as well as a 2022 MacDowell Residency Fellow. The group frequently performs at venues around Brooklyn; in the past few years, they have performed at Scholes St. Studio, Pete's Candy Store, and the Owl. Their first domestic tour as a band will take place in May 2022, with performances at Lakehouse Jazz (San Francisco), The Muse (Boulder, CO), Oberlin College and Conservatory, Rudy's Jazz Room, Fulton St. Collective, and Rockwood Music Hall.

Individual Bio

Chase Elodia is a composer and drummer based in Brooklyn, New York. His music takes cues from media theorists, singer-songwriters, jazz composers, and poets to ask questions about how we relate to both ourselves and one another in our increasingly digitized, secularized cultural moment. In 2021, he was announced as a recipient of ASCAP’s Young Jazz Composers Award for his song “The World Is Now Your Own,” composed in honor of the birth of pianist Glenn Zaleski and violinist Tomoko Omura’s child. In July 2020, he was awarded a grant by the Boulder County Arts Association to record a new album. Hailed as an “ambitious” composer by All About Jazz, he has presented his work in clubs and festivals across the world. In the past decade, he has performed in Austria, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Greece, Jordan, Netherlands, Switzerland, and across the United States in venues such as Bimhuis, Laguna Beach Festival of Arts, the San Jose Jazz Festival, the Tabuleiro Jazz Festival, and the Vienna Jazz Festival. He has shared the stage with Emma Frank, Morgan Guerin, and Allegra Krieger, and performs regularly with the Alex Hamburger Quartet and the ensemble Echoes. In Spring 2022, he will complete a fellowship at the MacDowell Artist Residency in New Hampshire, where he will work on new music for his ensemble. His writing about music has been published in Music & Literature, Drum! Magazine, and the Percussive Arts Society. Portrait Imperfect – his forthcoming album featuring Claire Dickson, Morgan Guerin, Theo Walentinty, and Tyrone Allen – will be released on Biophilia Records in May 2022.
