Dave Meder: New American Hymnal Quartet

See All Events

Dave Meder, a distinguished pianist, composer, and educator, stands out as one of the prominent artists of his generation. His wide-ranging musical palette and interdisciplinary approach have garnered recognition in prestigious competitions such as the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, the American Pianists Awards, and the Chamber Music America New Jazz Works commissioning program. Meder's defining aesthetic reflects a strikingly postmodern sense of stylistic adventure, described by All About Jazz as "a vibrant hybrid of the whole American spectrum."

The 'New American Hymnal' Quartet marks a recent formation, featuring longtime rhythm section collaborators Marty Jaffe and Michael Piolet, along with acclaimed trumpeter Philip Dizack.

Drummer Michael Piolet, originally from Chicago, has an extensive performance history with steel pan virtuoso Leon Foster Thomas, dynamic pianist Eric Lewis, and vocalist Veronica Swift. Since 2018, he has been serving as the percussionist for the acclaimed Broadway musical Hamilton.

Bassist Marty Jaffe, a student of Ron Carter, Ray Drummond, and others, is among New York City’s most sought-after bassists. He has shared the stage with musical icons like Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Ingrid Jensen, Karrin Allyson, Harold Mabern, Sullivan Fortner, Sergio Mendes, and Steve Wilson. Jaffe earned recognition as the winner of the 2013 International Society of Bassists Jazz Competition, a prestigious award for young bassists.

Trumpeter Philip Dizack has established himself as a key player on the global jazz scene, acknowledged in DownBeat 2007 as one of twenty-five “Trumpet Players for the Future.” Apart from his solo work, he is recognized for collaborations with Shai Maestro, notably on the highly acclaimed album "Human," released on ECM records. Dizack also served as a featured soloist on the 2021 Remy Le Boeuf album "Assembly of Shadows," receiving two Grammy© nominations for Best Instrumental Composition and Best Instrumental Arrangement. Currently, Philip is a Professor of Jazz Trumpet and Coordinator of Jazz Chamber Music at the University of North Texas, and he has taught at the Siena Summer Jazz Workshop in Italy.
