Edy Aguilar is a piñata maker from Athens, Alabama. Piñatas are used in traditional Mexican culture to celebrate special occasions. Edy was taught this art by her mother who brought this tradition from Mexico, where Edy’s mother learned from her own father. Edy is passionate about sharing in the joy piñata-making and educating Alabama students about piñatas and has visited elementary schools in Alabama and has participated in an apprenticeship to demonstrate how to make piñatas. She hopes to share her culture through this folkloric practice and desires to see people create their own piñatas rather than purchasing mass-produced piñatas.
