Hannah Marks Quartet

Bassist Hannah Marks leads a dynamic quartet featuring some of New York City's most promising jazz musicians: Nathan Reising on alto saxophone, Lex Korten on piano, and Steven Crammer on drums. The quartet's repertoire reflects a fearless and improvisatory focus, delving into songs by iconic figures such as Geri Allen, Dewey Redman, Paul Motian, and Marks' original compositions. While embracing an edgy and modern sound, the band draws inspiration from legendary jazz groups like the Branford Marsalis Quartet, Miles Davis' Second Quintet, and Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet.

The Hannah Marks Quartet has graced renowned NYC venues, including The 55 Bar, The Jazz Gallery, Bar Lunatico, and Bar Bayeux, as well as performing at notable jazz festivals like the Iowa City Jazz Festival and Center City Jazz Festival.

Hannah Marks, a bassist, composer, and educator based in New York City, is set to release her debut album, "Outsider, Outlier," on October 20, 2023, under Out Of Your Head Records. The album, an explosive exploration of belonging and empowerment, pays homage to her affinity for punk, noise, and free improvisation. Marks has an extensive performance history at festivals such as the Detroit Jazz Festival, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, 80-35 Music Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, and Indy Jazz Festival.

In addition to leading the experimental rock project "Outsider, Outlier," Marks is recognized for her role as a side-woman, praised for her "fresh, modern, and original approach to playing the bass" by Marcus Printup. Her impressive list of collaborations includes Geoffrey Keezer, Nasheet Waits, Terri Lyne Carrington, Anna Webber, Miles Okazaki, Ingrid Jensen, Kalia Vandever, Matt Wilson, Ted Nash, Morgan Guerin, and Marcus Printup. Marks' diverse discography includes contributing to Geoffrey Keezer's Grammy award-winning composition "Refuge," Kristen Lee Sergeant's "Falling" with saxophonist Ted Nash, and Heartland Trio's debut album "Year One."

Beyond her performances, Marks is committed to sharing her passion for music with various communities, leading masterclasses on music and entrepreneurship at institutions such as Brown University, Indiana University, and the University of Denver. Currently on the faculty at The Spence School, Marks has earned recognition as a MacDowell Fellow (2023) and has participated in prestigious programs such as the Stanford Jazz Workshop Mentor Fellow program (2022-23), the Woodshed Network (2021), Betty Carter Jazz Ahead (2019), and the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music (2018).
