Earn a scholarship in order to attend an annual gathering of artists, administrators, community leaders, planners, designers, and other professionals exploring models at the intersection of arts, cultural heritage, and public policy.

Scholarship Guidelines

South Arts is offering scholarship opportunities to attend the 2024 Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit. This summit is presented by Creative Placemaking Communities in partnership with South Arts.

Award levels range from $375 to $1000.

Summit Dates:

The in-person conference will be held in Atlanta, GA, March 5-8, 2024

For residents of Tennessee:

Scholarships for residents of Tennessee are available through the Tennessee Arts Commission's grant portal. Visit their website and access the information in the "Individuals Applying to the Creative Placemaking Summit" tab for guidelines and to access the application. These scholarships are made possible by a sponsorship from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Scholarship Application Deadline:

Complete the online application by  11:59 p.m. EST November 30, 2023. South Arts intends to notify applicants of their status by the end of December, 2023.

Award Levels

South Arts is helping to support scholarships to the 2024 Creative Placemaking Summit. Funding for these scholarships are supported by our state partners. Each state sets their own award amounts. Partner states include: South Carolina, Tennessee…

South Arts strongly encourages you to make your hotel and travel arrangements as soon as possible. We realize that you may be waiting on a scholarship to finalize your travel arrangements. However, applying for a scholarship does not guarantee an award. 

A limited number of scholarships to cover the registration fee are offered to individuals in the South Arts region. South Arts will give priority to those applying from rural or small communities. South Arts encourages community teams of two or more to attend the conference, including artists, representatives of arts and cultural organizations, local government, Main Street organizations, community planning & development agencies, higher education, and others who may be likely partners in creative placemaking efforts.

*Note: For this program, “rural or small” is defined as cities/towns with a population of 50,000 or below.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants:

  • Individuals working in the arts, community development, local government or other sectors with a commitment to developing creative placemaking or implementing creative placemaking projects in their communities.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a resident of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee.

    All applicants must agree to complete a post-conference evaluation. Failure to complete the post-conference survey will render an applicant ineligible for future South Arts grants and programs.

Selection of Recipients

Applications will be reviewed and scored by South Arts staff for completeness and responsiveness.

South Arts is committed to practices and programs that create greater cultural equity, represent the diversity of our region, are inclusive of diverse voices and artistic expression, and are accessible to everyone.

South Arts will select scholarship recipients to ensure cultural and geographic representations reflective of the South and may prioritize those who have not received a past scholarship for this conference. Awards will be granted based on availability of funds.

Usage of Funds

Scholarship recipients will receive up to $1000. Individuals will be awarded 80% as the first payment and 20% after South Art’s receives and approves your final report. The awardee’s remaining funds will be available as a reimbursement towards expenses incurred related to the summit, such as lodging, travel, or a per diem. Organizations will receive one payment as a reimbursement payment after the summit. Some states may have their own reporting requirements that forgo the South Arts selection and payment process.

All awardees will be required to complete a short, final report to receive the remainder of funds. Please track receipts related to your conference experience: travel, hotel, per diem, etc. South Arts adheres to the IRS Standard Mileage Rate for travel by automobile.
